There is often a complaint that I get to hear “I called an electrician for a small work and he told me that he is busy and will come after a couple of days.” On the other hand, a advertisement for a low end IT professional will draw in hundreds of CVs. Why does this happen? Ask any urbanite and they will vouch that getting a carpenter, plumber or an AC mechanic is a tough task? Why is there a shortage of professionals to work on these tasks?
For one, many white-collar workers consider it beneath their dignity to work on what they consider are menial tasks. Most of these workers make more money than someone who has a ‘regular’ 9 to 5 job. The problem lies with our education system where there is a crazy rush to get into IIT rather than ITI. Parents spend a fortune to get their kids crack the tough competitive exams only to realise that their children are not good enough to make it to the elite club. Even those, who do make it, realise to their horror that the world of IIT is a different ball game than what they have been told.
Why should we not focus on the bottom of the pyramid and create employment potential, specially in the smaller towns and villages. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Yojana was a right step in this direction.
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) implemented by National Skill Development Corporation. The objective of this Skill Certification Scheme is to enable a large number of Indian youth to take up industry-relevant skill training that will help them in securing a better livelihood. Individuals with prior learning experience or skills will also be assessed and certified under Recognition of Prior Learning. The PMKVY provides 60 lakh youth with the opportunity to get trained, assessed, and certified. Linking, Aptitude, aspiration, and knowledge of PMKVY to potential employers. This personalised learning will ensure that those who qualify from PMKVY find gainful employment in various sectors, across the country.
